Physics egg drop!

Sooo... if anyone has had a physics class before, and a lab was to drop an egg off the side of the school... HOW'D YOU DO IT?!

btw, my class only gets 5 sheets of computer paper and 1 meter of masking tape. So, is anyone creative enough to think about this?


So far, my group has come up with failing ideas. Cones are too aerodynamic to work. Plus, they just flip over and the egg rolls out and smashes against the ground unprotected... If anyone would care to help, it'd be appreciated.

    That Guy...

    Build cylinders around the surface of the egg... think honeycomb. The placement of the paper should be able to disburse the force of impact over the surface of the egg to take advantage of the natural strength of its shape... that might not make sense, I'm a little toasted. But that's how I did it and it worked. :D

      Actually.. that made great sense. It wouldn't take too much paper either. I'm going over how to get them attached by using as little tape as possible.

    We JUST did this in my Adv Physics class. We could do pretty much whatever we wanted though. I suspended mine in Jello, double concentrated for more firmness. It worked surprisingly well.

      we're doing it in stages.

      1. about 3 ft (side of our lab desks)

      2. about 15 ft (over a ramp we have at school)

      3. about 30 ft (off the side of the field bleachers)

      4. about 38ft (off the side of the press box on the field bleachers)

      it has to survive each time, and she has to be able to check the egg every time. i.e. no wrapping the egg in tape.. :(

        That's retarded, dropping the same egg over and over from greater and greater heights is going to build up stress points and micro-fractures in its surface. This is essentially putting the difficulty of success at an exponentially higher level with each drop.

          Uh.. yeah.. that's her normal take on things.. She likes watching us fail. Our class has gotten to the point where we don't ask her questions, because we know she's just gonna answer in more questions. I don't think I can honestly say that she's answered a question with a REAL answer. She likes "letting us figure it out"

    I'm in physics ap and we didn't do this lab :'(

    but if we did i would probably go with the dispersed force idea... the honors class did it and most of the eggs broke with suspension models

    if i was doing it just for fun, i would personally surround the egg with peeps...b/c peeps are godly and indestructible lol

    do not fold the papers or anything but try arranging them in a mater that creates a hole in the middle and a parachute type shape... then slowly bend it upward and their ya go...
